Way before the Spaniards brought the European horse to the American continent, these lands were inhabited by horses. Hippidion was one of them. It differs from its living relatives mainly because it had a more robust body, a larger head, shorter limbs and nasal bones that were loose in much of their length. Its name means “Little horse”.
