In South America there were two species of large bears, one of them was Arctotherium. Like most bears, their eating habits must have been omnivorous, although its short snout suggests a more carnivorous diet – in order to have a stronger mandible, the snout has to be short and robust. Their body mass was around several hundred kilograms, similar to that of grizzlie bears in North America. Its name means “Bear beast”.
